2 COLLEGES GET THE NOD TO CONDUCT B.COM COURSES ENTIRELY IN TAMIL

3 University Rankholders among 176 Graduands
At the 12th Convocation of The Hindustan College of Arts & Science
Chennai, 24th July 2010 : 3 University rankholers were among th 176 graduands at the 12th Convocation of the Hindustan College of Arts & Science on whom degrees were conferred by Col Dr Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras. Dr (Mrs) Elizabeth Verghese Chairperson Hindustan Group of Institutions presided over the function. Dr Prem C Marthandan, Director – Projects, Hindustan Group of Institutions, Dr Susan Marthandan Director Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Padur, Dr V J Philip, Principal, HCAS and several others including faculty students along with their parents participated.
Delivering the Graduation Day address, Dr Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras announced that the university was announcing that all convocation functions at affiliate educational institutions of the University of Madras will henceforth be conducted only in Tamil. He further elaborated that should any one else not familiar with Tamil may deliver their address in English but the speech should be translated into Tamil and copies distributed at the function coinciding with the speech. He further announced that 2 colleges had expressed their intention to conduct B Com courses entirely in Tamil and that the necessary permissions had been granted. Students graduating from the course will be conferred degrees which will specially state that the students had completed the course with Tamil as the medium of instruction.
Dr Thiruvasagam went on to state that about Rs. 82,000 crores had been earmarked for higher education in the 11th Five Year Plan of which about 32% was allocated to research and development work in higher education. He stated that the mandate to higher education institutions was three fold a) Expansion b) Inclusion and c) Excellence. He stated that while the average rate of campus recruitment was 6% nationally, Tamil Nadu’s conversion ratio was 27% a four-fold achievement. He stated that these were in sync with the dreams of great leaders of India and that with the Right to Education being promulgated and education made compulsory for children between the ages 6-14, India would emerge as the nation with the maximum no of educated youth in the whole world by 2030. A survey conducted by the university had indicated that poverty was one of the reasons for children staying away from educational institutions. To correct this anamoly, the Govt of Tamil Nadu had declared by a G O that FREE EDUCATION WILL BE PROVIDED UPTO POST GRADUATE COURSES FOR POOR STUDENTS. He exhorted the students to learn and gain fluency in their mother-tongue as it would give them great self confidence.
Delivering the Presidential Address, Dr (Mrs) Elizabeth Verghese Chairperson Hindustan Group of Institutions declared that students must aim to become entrepreneurs so that they can become job providers instead of becoming job seekers. Mrs Verghese recalled the founders personal motto of “make every man a success and no man a failure” and hoped that today’s graduates would emerge as achievers in their chosen vocations.
In his felicitation address, Dr Prem Marthandan Director Projects Hindustan Group of Institutions declared that today was a red letter day in the careers of the graduands. “Today is also the day when you will stop being followers and move on to become leaders. Education is only one component of wisdom in any person and I do hope that you are all endowed with immense wisdom. That would be the best tribute from you all for your alma mater” he declared.
Earlier in the day, Dr V J Philip, Principal, HCAS read out the report of activities conducted through the year 2009-2010.
